Miami-Dade County

In a surprise last-minute move, Miami-Dade commissioners decided in the wee hours Wednesday morning to raid rainy-day reserves to avoid laying off 169 library workers and slashing library hours in the coming budget year.

Though the action will save the jobs of employees who turned out in force to a public hearing that began Tuesday afternoon, it will create a whopping $20 million budget hole next year to fund the county’s 49 public libraries at the same level as this year.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez warned against tapping the one-time reserves, since they would not be available again to cover recurring expenses. Unless Miami-Dade overhauls the way it funds and runs the libraries between now and next year, commissioners will have to cut services or hike the property-tax rate in 12 months. Read more...

Check out our amazing new high school library!

High school students came back to campus after summer break to find the main library completely reimagined. Over the break, the library was gutted and a larger, modern learning space created. This new design, by the renowned Japanese architect Paul Tange, who is a former ASIJ parent and trustee, creates more space for students to collaborate, conduct research, and also to study quietly when needed. Windows Is Dead - Business Insider

R.I.P. Windows

By purchasing Nokia’s smartphone division, Microsoft has killed its signature strategy.

Windows is dead. Let’s all salute it—pour out a glass for it, burn a CD for it, reboot your PC one last time. Windows had a good run. For a time, it powered the world. But that era is over. It was killed by the unlikeliest of collaborations—Microsoft’s ancient enemies working over decades, in concert: Steve Jobs, Linus Torvalds, and most of all, two guys named Larry and Sergey.

Late on Monday, Microsoft announced its unsurprising, $7.2 billion plan to buy Nokia’s smartphone division. Nokia is the world’s largest manufacturer of phones that run Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system (which is a bit like pointing out that, at 5-foot-6, I’m the tallest member of my immediate family). Microsoft is buying Nokia in order to control both the hardware and software in its devices; this move, Microsoft promises, will improve the phones themselves and make them easier to sell.

Why Are You Using Social Media Channels?

Why Are You Using Social Media Channels?

By John Palinkas

You are probably a bit puzzled by the above headline. After all, almost everyone uses social media, right? If you ask your friends, they probably have at least one account on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, etc. You probably even have accounts on multiple social media sites. Most companies have switched from traditional marketing to social media. So, why is everyone using social media?

I recently became the vice president of marketing for the New Jersey chapter of Society for Information Management (SIM), a networking group for IT leaders. I was asked to serve in the marketing role to specifically create a social media marketing campaign for SIM. As I was describing my plans with other members, I discovered something interesting. Many people think the only difference between social media marketing and traditional marketing is the channels you use. Let me give you an example.
