Question: As physical books go away, and computers and smart devices take their place, at what point does a library stop being a library, and start becoming something else?
Somewhere in the middle of this question lies the nagging fear and anxiety that we see brimming to the top among library insiders.
People who think libraries are going away simply because books are going digital are missing the true tectonic shifts taking place in the world of information.
Libraries are not about books. In fact, they were never about books.
Libraries exist to give us access to information. Until recently, books were one of the more efficient forms of transferring information from one person to another. Prison Library Offers A Place To Escape by NPR Staff

Some 1,700 residents of the Jessup Correctional Institution in Maryland make very good use of their library. Most inmates will never win early release, so the library becomes a place to improve reading skills, write a letter home, watch an instructional video on auto mechanics or just escape, mentally. Host Liane Hansen visits the prison to talk with longtime prison librarian Glennor Shirley. Shirley runs the libraries for the entire Maryland prison system.

Tablet Ownership Triples Among College Students - Wired Campus - The Chronicle of Higher Education
The number of college students who say they own tablets has more than tripled since a survey taken last year, according to new poll results released today. The Pearson Foundation sponsored the second-annual survey, which asked 1,206 college students and 204 college-bound high-school seniors about their tablet ownership. The results suggest students increasingly prefer to use the devices for reading. Read more

Battle over library closures intensifies - Telegraph

The government was today presented with a petition of 70,000 signatures against library closures collected by the Women's Institute.
Campaigners held a rally in London to coincide with a Parliamentary hearing by
the Culture, Media and Sport select committee on library closures. Culture
Minister Ed Vaizey has agreed to demands to produce a report by 2014
assessing the impact of changes in the library service for "good or bad".
Shadow culture minister Dan Jarvis claimed his opposite number faced becoming
the "Dr Beeching of libraries" - a reference to Richard Beeching,
who was behind the closure of many railway routes. Read more:
