The giant Web retailer pays an undisclosed amount to acquire the book-reading social network.

Amazon agreed today to buy book-recommendation site Goodreads for an undisclosed amount.

The San Francisco-based company should provide Amazon with another way to get readers to buy books from it, both digitally and from its warehouses. Amazon said it also plans to use Goodreads to help authors find readers who might not otherwise know about them. Read more....

Goodreads Reaches 10 Million Members, 360 Million Books - SocialTimes

The social network for reading, sharing, and recommending books now boasts 10 million members, who have collectively shelved more than 360 million books since the site launched in January 2007. Goodreads announced the milestone on August 13, 2012 in a post on the company blog.
Most of the growth has happened in the last 15 months, according to Goodreads community manager Patrick Brown. The first 5 million members signed up during the first four and a half years. Since then, membership has doubled. Read more...

At the BayNet Annual Meeting on May 6, 2011 at the San Francisco Public Library, Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project discussed the latest research findings of the Project about how Americans use the Internet and cell phones. He described how libraries can be actors in building and participating in social networks through their use of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and blogging and through delivering their time-tested — and trusted — services to their patrons.
