Some job seekers are hesitant to accept temporary or contract assignments because they are concerned if they commit to something short-term, they will miss out on opportunities for full-time assignments. This may be a bit short-sighted because many employers are now using staffing agencies (and sometimes internal recruiters) to “try before they buy” job candidates. In many cases, short-term assignments are being extended and even becoming full-time opportunities for some workers.  Read more...

Act Like a Business Owner to Advance Your Career | CAREEREALISM

Act Like a Business Owner to Advance Your Career | CAREEREALISM

Whether you work for a global corporation, a small business, or for yourself, it is absolutely essential you THINK and ACT like an “owner” — “own” your job, own your role as a leader or manager, own your roles and responsibilities — put yourself in the shoes of a business owner, and think and behave as any owner would do.
This is not new career advice; many of us have heard this before, and many of us have probably given this advice to others. But what does it actually MEAN to think and act like a business owner?
Standing in the shoes of a business owner is a mind-set shift and in my opinion includes fully embracing the following as part of HOW you DO your job and how you THINK about your job:

1. Show Passion and Enthusiasm

Both your head and your heart need to be “in the game.” Your clients and customers need to see and “feel” your enthusiasm for what you do. Your colleagues, team mates and direct reports need to sense your passion for what you do. Passion and enthusiasm are the fuel for the energy that flows into your job. Others are drawn to you and inspired by you in direct correlation to level of sincere passion and enthusiasm you exhibit.
Think about it, can any business survive, long-term, if the owner is NOT truly passionate and enthusiastic about what he or she does? Read more.

1. Google Has Replaced the Resume

Recruiters are now using Google and LinkedIn searches to find talent, instead of paying for job-board or talent databases like they used to do. In fact, many companies are even mandating that every new application go through a Google screening process. So that means the first page of your Google results matter much more than they ever did before during a job search. Read more....

Working more than one job is something many people, including information professionals, have found necessary to do over the past few years. Some are working full-time and want another job for additional income or other reasons. Others work multiple part time jobs, but reluctantly; a full-time job is their preferred work situation but such positions are still hard to find. Still others prefer to have more than one job and seek out multiple employment opportunities eagerly. These multiple or additional jobs may be part-time, and/or project, temporary, contract, or consulting positions (also known as contingent work). They may entail working at a physical office or workplace, working from home, or occasional one-off events such as a speaking engagement or teaching a workshop. Read more...

To make sure we’re on the same page about dealing with an incompetent boss and not just a way to be nasty about your bad boss, let’s get on the same page. An incompetent person is someone who is functionally inadequate or insufficient in knowledge, skills, judgment, or strength.

If this is what you’re talking about then you’re right, they are incompetent. It happens. In other words, the boss doesn’t know squat about being a manager and probably knows little to nothing about the area of work you do.

While it can be frustrating to have an incompetent boss, an incompetent boss can seriously damage or derail your career. If they do have a serious lack of knowledge, we know that they can do nothing to grow you as an employee which means any growth will be yours to make happen. Let’s look at the potential damage they can inflict and what you can do to minimize or avoid.
